?If the job sounds too good to be true, it is.? and ?If they are vague on ...

http://www.zoomstart.com

http://www.sfsu.edu/

Now that we have covered surviving the first few months of freshman year, let?s focus on the opposite end of the college spectrum: finding a job. Although, this post is not just for college graduates; this information will help recent grads and some currently unemployed. Websites like MONSTER.COM and CAREERBUILDER.COM just allow companies to post all they want, which means some could be scams, but still some could be legitimate jobs. You have to research fully before spending your time applying and interviewing at the posted companies. Newspapers are relatively safer when job hunting, since there is a monetary fee to post an ad, yet these should be further researched as well.

As a soon to be grad, and marketing major, I am unfortunately the target of most of the scams. These scams are looking for ?Recent Grads? ?No Experience Necessary? ?We believe in rotational programs starting with sales? or just general ?Sales Positions?. These positions usually entail cold calling or door to door sales. Don?t get me wrong, sometimes legitimate jobs involve cold calling or door to door sales, but they will be for well known companies and they will tell you upfront, that is what you will be doing. The idea of rotational programs are fantastic, the best employees are the ones that understand how the whole operation works. However, these scam programs start you in commission sales and hope you quit before they have to actually pay you a salary for the other ?rotations? in the company.

http://cheezburger.com

Now, unfortunately, I can?t just tell you to stay away from companies X, Y and Z. These large companies have hundreds of smaller companies with normal sounding names recruiting for them. The one that I came in contact with was Cydcor. I was searching for a marketing job in the South Jersey/Philly area.? I found five companies I liked, so of course I Googled them. ***Make sure you go to the second page of the results. If that just seems foreign to you (I never go to the 2nd page) re-Google the business with the word ?scam?*** I did not do this, so I received a call for an interview with East Coast Business Concepts and scheduled for a week later. I excitedly told my mom and of course she had to check it out herself. She went beyond page 1 of Google and saw that some people we not happy there. I then checked it out and immediately found two posts; Sully?s Blog and Ripoff Report, be sure to scroll down in the comments on Sully?s there is a list of about 50 affiliates. They were affiliates of Cydcor. It turns out these companies go door to door selling Verizon FiOS, for example, and will not reimburse you for gas and over saturates the market so selling is very difficult. The pyramid scheme comes into play when they want you to start your own company with them and recruit your own sales force, but you will not get all the money, only what trickles down. Obviously, when I read this, my excitement for my interview was gone. So I then Googled the other companies+scam and found that three of the five I found were part of Cydcor and there were plenty of other ?mother? companies in other parts of the US, doing the same thing on the sites I looked at. Since these sites are basically posting for sales jobs, they are targeting marketing graduates, as well as those who are unemployed seeking a job.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now that you know what jobs to stay away from and how to investigate them; how are you going to land that fantastic job when you find it? You could find a pin like me on Pinterest (found this the night before I posted) or read my lovely advice I spent hours compiling. Currently, I am still job searching (hopefully not for too much longer), but here are my myths and realities for writing resumes. Can you guess them correctly?
1. Don?t obviously use words from the company website or job posting.
2. Your resume can only be one page, that?s as far as employers look.
www.crazylaughs.com
3. Your resume is your first impression; make them feel like they know you through the paper.
4. When job searching, send your resume to every company you can possibly think of.
5. You need to write an objective at the beginning of your resume.
6. Separate your work experience into relevant and other.
7. Add all the clubs and activities you were part of to fluff your resume, especially if you have not had many ?real jobs?.
8. A resume should be professional and no personal information should be stated.
9. To make your resume stand out, use funky font and a cool layout.
10.People still read cover letters so you should spend the time to write one.
11. Looking over the web site is all the preparation you need to do for an interview.
Okay did you write down your answers? Just kidding, I think we are all beyond that by now. Here are the results.
1. MYTH! Those words are called ?buzz words? for a reason.? Using their key words shows you took the time to read the posting thoroughly or even looked through their website before applying. Recruiters and Human Resource personnel have been taught to look for these words; these words are what they want their employees to possess. Now obviously, don?t go crazy and try to copy the posting or website word for word because that is just tacky.
2. MYTH! No one wants to read a ten page resume, but cramming everything on a .5 inch margin page doesn?t look good either; I?ve done it, it looks bad. If you do not have much to put on a resume, just add an extra space between parts and use solid 1 inch margins. If you have too much information on your resume there are two options; cut out your least recent jobs or activities (if they don?t really strengthen your resume) or change your margins to .75 inch and bold your headlines instead of adding extra space between them. Keeping it one page makes printing and handing to people easier, but if you need to go to a second page? organize your ?most relevant to the job? items at the beginning of your resume, so if they don?t go to the second page you get your most important aspects across.
3. REALITY! This is a 2D version of you that you need to make feel real 3D, or at least 2.5D. This is your first impression with your employer and
www.wikia.net
you want to make it count. If you don?t make an impression, you go in the trash, and no one likes to be in the trash?except Oscar.
4. MYTH! Sending your resume to 20+ companies in one sitting it ridiculous. You want to personalize each resume and application you send. Let the business think you specifically want to work for them; that they were not just part of your mass mailing campaign. The WORST thing you can do is forget to change your cover letter or objective and send to the wrong company.
5. I believe yes, this is a REALITY, but the jury is out on this one still. The objective in your resume is like a super mini cover letter. You can change it for each job you apply to and can put those BUZZWORDS in it. It just gives a little extra personalization to your resume.
6. REALITY! If this is your first real job or you are switching industries you should separate your work experiences. That first job I had at 14 in a market is not relevant to my marketing career; however, it does show that I have been working since I was legally able. If you are changing career industries, your most recent job may not be the most relevant; so re-organize your job history to promote you the best for the job.
7. MYTH! Only put what strengthens your resume, such as leadership in a club or activity. Being a member of the soccer team or the knitting club doesn?t really make you any better of a candidate for a ?real world? job. Now if you were the president of a club, you could put that down and talk about your responsibilities. Bottom line is: keep clubs and activities out unless they directly relate to the job you are applying for.
8. MYTH! As stated in #3 this is your first impression you need to make them feel like they know you, and like you, before you even meet face to face. Don?t go overboard talking about your pets or fave food, but tell them something that no one else can. For example, you started your own business, even though it only lasted a couple months; you helped with some program up at your school; anything that will set you apart and is relevant to the job.
9. MYTH! This fits with #8 as well, but there is a line between obnoxious and standing out. Unlike Elle Woods in Legally Blonde (I cant believe I am actually referencing that movie?) spraying some perfume on a pink resume is not going to fly. Pick a common, legible font type and use black ink. Let the words do the talking. You should however, print them on heavier paper (it?s actually called resume paper) if giving a physical copy to a prospective employer.
10. REALITY! Cover letters still matter, just about every previous topic falls into this part. The cover letter is your personal correspondence with the company, it is how you say ?I fit in your company because of X, Y and Z and I can bring A, B and C to the company and I am just awesome because?? Obviously, not in those words, but this is where you can really talk yourself up and try to connect with the recruiter or HR employee. You format it just like a business letter, if you don?t know how to write a formal business letter just Google it, they have great templates.
11. MYTH! Their website is a great place to start, but Google them! Also, if you know who you will interviewing with try to find them on LinkedIn or Facebook; you know they will be doing the same thing to you (make your profile private if you haven?t already, but if you don?t post scandalous things then you have nothing to worry about). Looking up your interviewer gives you some small talk topics to go to as well as maybe a common interest to thread into conversation. Interviews are all about making that personal connection so they remember you when it comes time to making the ?final cut?.
In terms of interviews, just be yourself, I have found that works the best. The interviews I have gone on may not have immediately turned into jobs, but they liked me and kept me on file for future openings. Remember, you have already made yourself up to be the ?perfect? prospective employee in your resume, now let yourself come out so you can really make a personal connection and be remembered as a genuine person. Dress for the job you want; the worst thing is to walk into an interview and feel under or over dressed. Men, collared shirt and dress pants at least, probably go for the whole suit look for most corporate jobs. Women, dress pants and a non- revealing top, heels or solid neutral flats, jacket optional. By looking at their website you should be able to get a good idea of the dress code. If you get the job they will tell you what the daily office dress code is so there will be no more guessing.
Good Luck on your job searches, use your best judgement and be yourself!
Students Learn as They Plant a Garden - Northridge-Chatsworth, CA ...
Digging up a little dirt, planting seedlings, providing water and watching them grow in your very own garden is a happy, healthy learning experience for all children.?
Students with special needs, ages 6 to 18, got a chance to experience the joy and discovery that comes from planting a garden when the American Heart Association,?with the support of Dole Food Company,?last week donated a Teaching Garden to Northpoint School at?9650 Zelzah Ave. in Northridge.
The Teaching Garden provides a hands-on learning experience rooted in offering nutritional choices. It is a real-life laboratory where students learn how to plant seeds, nurture the growing plants, harvest the food and, ultimately, understand the connection between the environment and their health.?
Teaching Gardens have been donated to more than 100 schools nationwide.? This Teaching Garden will be the first to be placed in a school for children with special needs.?
The building and planting of the garden is just one of the fun activities the children experienced.? They also got a visit from Teaching Garden founder Kelly Meyer and actresses Shelly Buckner of the TV series That?s So Raven and Mahaley Hessam of The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
To complement the Teaching Garden?s lessons on healthy eating habits, the kids were led through fitness and sports activities to place a highlight on fitness.? Liza Utter-Pernice, a local restaurateur and chef, provided a cooking demonstration so the children will have lots of recipe ideas once their garden is ready for harvest.
Childhood obesity is at epidemic levels.? Today, one in three American children is overweight or obese.? To combat this growing crisis, the Child and Family Guidance Center is implementing health and fitness aspects into many of its programs, which provide mental health services to local children and families who have experienced emotional and mental illnesses, abuse, neglect or trauma.?
?We thank the American Heart Association and Dole Food Company for providing this Teaching Garden to the children at Northpoint School," said Rick Hunnwell, school director.? ?Within our community, we are fighting the causes and effects of childhood obesity and related illnesses.? This garden is giving our children with special needs the tools they need to win that fight, just like all children deserve.?
The Teaching Gardens were created using American Heart Association science and nutrition guidelines coupled with information from gardening and education experts.? The program combines nutrition education with garden-based learning. Numerous studies have shown participation in school garden programs can have a positive impact on student's attitudes toward fruits and vegetables and that healthy behavior positively impacts learning. The goal of the program is to improve children's overall health.
The Child and Family Guidance Center?s Northpoint School is a non-public school and intensive outpatient program for students ages 6 through 18 with emotional and/or behavioral problems whose needs cannot be met in regular schools. Northpoint combines academic instruction and individual, group and family therapy with a broad spectrum of specialized services. The focus is on developing each student?s unique strengths and abilities, resolving specific difficulties, re-integrating students into community schools and/or awarding them with a high school diploma.?
The Child and Family Guidance Center is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1962.? For nearly 50 years, the Center has provided high-quality mental health care, supportive social services and linkages to needed community resources.
Drinking As A Couple: Do Or Don't? | YourTango
drinking wine couple
Do you drink on all of your dates?
When does alcohol stop being a social lubricant and start hurting your relationship?
I knew my one-and-a-half year?relationship was "for real" when alcohol stopped being a regular part of our dates.?
More from YourTango: Rise & Shine! 5 Best Morning Sex Positions
The first few dates are always a little awkward, so there's no harm in a glass of wine or two?? plus, it gives you some ready-made conversation topics: "I love this cocktail! Want to try it?" "Hm, it's okay, but I think I like mine better..." But after you've been dating a few months, is it normal to still be drinking every time you see each other? Not so much, I think. A glass of red wine with dinner is okay, but if you're getting tanked on the regular, you're probably uncomfortable or have something to hide.
Most people I know follow this general pattern: Drink while they're still getting to know each other, then slowly slip into a pattern of no longer needing alcohol to relax or be happy. Yes, there are definitely exceptions, and I have watched relationships disintegrate and fights occur because of someone's drinking. But on the whole, the more stable the relationship, the less alcohol.
Some sources, though, suggest this is far from the truth. A?recent study shows that married women drink more than their single, divorced and widowed friends. Married men, on the other hand, drink much less than single men. Perhaps by the time they're married?? rather than in a long-term relationship?? people let down their guard once again??
The Avenger
154548195 Former Taliban fighters display their weapons after they joined Afghan government forces during a ceremony in Herat on Monday.
Photo by Arif Karimi/AFP/Getty Images.
Many folks watching last night?s debate noticed something odd about Mitt Romney. He abandoned his tough-guy rhetoric and positioned himself as the candidate of peace. ?We can't kill our way out of this mess,? he said. Instead, he promised to ?help the world of Islam ? reject this radical violent extremism.?
There?s a flip side to that irony. Barack Obama, the liberal law professor, has become the lord of drones, raids, ousters, and assassinations. He hates troop deployments but loves to purge, punish, and liquidate. He?s not the candidate of war. He?s the candidate of vengeance.
I?m not saying the candidates have totally switched postures. Romney is still trying to out-macho Obama on military spending, standing up to Russia, and apologizing for America?s sins. Obama is still calling Romney ?reckless? and complaining that the former governor would leave too many troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Obama?s complaint is about leaving our soldiers overseas after we?ve done the job. Obama is all for doing the job, if we can kill the bad guys and get out.
Last night, Obama used Bob Schieffer?s opening question about Libya to deliver part of his stump speech: ?We ended the war in Iraq, refocused our attention on those who actually killed us on 9/11. And as a consequence, al-Qaida's core leadership has been decimated.? Decimated is Obama?s code for drone strikes. But the core of this pitch is Iraq vs. Afghanistan. And the case for refocusing on Afghanistan is to get the people who killed us. Not that Afghanistan is turning out any better than Iraq, mind you. It?s not about curing the world. It?s about payback.
Obama didn?t answer Schieffer?s question about what went wrong in Benghazi, Libya. He talked about the aftermath instead: ?I immediately made sure that, number one, that we did everything we could to secure those Americans who were still in harm's way; number two, that we would investigate exactly what happened, and number three, most importantly, that we would go after those who killed Americans and we would bring them to justice. And that's exactly what we're going to do.?
Like George W. Bush crowing about Saddam Hussein, Obama couldn?t stop waving the scalp of Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi. ?Got rid of a despot who had killed Americans,? Obama bragged. He added: ?When it came time to making sure that Qaddafi did not stay in power, that he was captured, governor, your suggestion was that this was mission creep, that this was mission muddle. Imagine if we had pulled out at that point. You know, Muammar Qaddafi had more American blood on his hands than any individual other than Osama Bin Laden. And so we were going to make sure that we finished the job.? To Obama, finish the job doesn?t mean making Libya a paradise or even a democracy. It means terminating the villain.
That set the stage for Obama?s main blast:
When you were a candidate in 2008, as I was?and I said if I got Bin Laden in our sights, I would take that shot?you said we shouldn't move heaven and earth to get one man. And you said we should ask Pakistan for permission. And if we had asked Pakistan permission, we would not have gotten him. And it was worth moving heaven and earth to get him.
You know, after we killed Bin Laden, I was at Ground Zero for a memorial and talked to a young woman who was four years old when 9/11 happened. And the last conversation she had with her father was him calling from the twin towers, saying, "Payton, I love you, and I will always watch over you." And for the next decade, she was haunted by that conversation. And she said to me, "You know, by finally getting Bin Laden, that brought some closure to me." And when we do things like that?when we bring those who have harmed us to justice, that sends a message to the world, and it tells Payton that we did not forget her father.
If you?ve ever seen a capital murder trial, you?ll recognize the genre to which this canned, gut-wrenching story belongs. Victim, bereft child, memory, justice, closure. It?s the speech a prosecutor delivers to get a death sentence from a jury. CNN?s dial group of undecided Florida voters loved this speech. The men trailed off, but the women stayed enthralled to the end.
The men gave Obama a bigger bump for his next answer. The question posed by Schieffer was what to do if the Afghan government is still unable to manage its security by the time our troops are supposed to leave. Again, Obama didn?t answer. Instead, he took this opportunity to argue that by the time he took office, ?We'd forgotten why we had gone. We went because there were people who were responsible for 3,000 American deaths. And so we decimated al-Qaida's core leadership in the border regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.? On the TV screen, the green line showing the emotional response of men in the dial group soared.
Again and again, it was Obama who spoke of righteousness, justice, and bringing the pain. He vowed to send China a ?clear signal that America is a Pacific power.? The men in the dial group surged with approval as Obama recalled going to Israel?s Holocaust museum to face ?the nature of evil.? He even won the contest over which candidate could pledge more often to impose ?crippling? sanctions on Iran. It was a tight race, but Obama pulled it out, 4-to-3.
No wonder the president capped the debate with a joke about horses and bayonets. Bayonets are for hand-to-hand combat. They?re for getting bogged down in a situation of prolonged peril. Obama has no interest in that. He?s a man of drones, not bayonets. He?s for using modern technology to administer, at minimal risk, the ancient rite of punishment. And, God help us, we love it.
Verlander is armed and dangerous for postseason
DETROIT (AP) ? Justin Verlander's introduction to postseason baseball six years ago left him dazzled and exhausted.
Worn down toward the end of his rookie season, he made his playoff debut at Yankee Stadium. A couple weeks later, he was on the mound for Game 1 of the World Series.
"It was such a whirlwind, really, that entire season. I remember standing on the mound in old Yankee Stadium ... and growing up as a kid you see all of the postseason games and all of the magic that had happened in that stadium, and it was kind of a surreal moment for me," the Detroit ace said.
"I feel like I have pitched in big games now and understand what my body's going to be going through and what my mind is going to be going through and I am able to rein it in a little more and use it more to my advantage."
Verlander is now 29 and he returns to the Fall Classic a more mature pitcher than he was in 2006. His last two seasons have been nothing short of phenomenal, and now he's adding another line to his resume with the first truly outstanding postseason stretch of his career.
In three playoff starts against Oakland and the New York Yankees, he's allowed all of two runs ? a pair of harmless solo homers that did little to slow Detroit's march to the American League pennant. On Wednesday night, he'll pitch Game 1 against San Francisco.
"He's learned to handle these situations. He's learned how to stay pretty calm throughout the game in these big-game situations," manager Jim Leyland said.
The 6-foot-5 right-hander can make pitching look remarkably effortless. Verlander will often settle into an early groove without necessarily reaching back for his triple-digit fastball until the later innings.
"I think you can help to build your natural ability," said Verlander, who led the majors in pitches thrown in 2011 and 2012. "I think a lot of the work I do in the offseason in my lower half and my core allows me to stay strong throughout the game so that I don't start to break down when I get to 100 pitches."
Verlander went 24-5 in 2011, sweeping the AL MVP and Cy Young awards. Although he won only 17 games this year, his ERA was still a sparkling 2.64 and he came within two outs of throwing a third career no-hitter against Pittsburgh in May.
About the only thing he can't seem to do is hit. Verlander is 0-for-his-career at the plate, although if he breaks that drought in the World Series, it's fair to assume his teammates and manager will never hear the end of it.
After appearing on Conan O'Brien's show and promoting a video game with model Kate Upton, Verlander's newfound celebrity status doesn't seem to have affected his pitching. He's looked as focused as ever this postseason.
Detroit is trying to win its first World Series since 1984. Verlander will oppose Barry Zito in the opener.
"I had the opportunity to pitch in the World Series before," Verlander said. "I don't think I really appreciated the magnitude of how hard it is to get there."
In 2006, Verlander started Game 1 of the World Series, and the Tigers lost to St. Louis 7-2. Verlander gave up six earned runs and made an error on a pickoff attempt, and Detroit couldn't break through against Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes.
"No offense to him, because he beat us and all that, but we didn't swing the bats well," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "I got a little worried right off the bat."
Verlander threw two wild pitches and made another crucial error to help the Cardinals wrap up the series in the fifth game.
Those travails are all but forgotten now. With the season on the line in Game 5 of this year's division series against Oakland, Verlander tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out 11 in one of the best games ever pitched by a Tiger in the postseason. Detroit then swept New York in four games in the AL championship series.
Verlander allowed a homer in the ninth inning in Game 3 of the ALCS, falling just short of becoming the first pitcher to throw consecutive shutouts in the postseason since Orel Hershiser did it for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988. Detroit won anyway, 2-1.
On Wednesday night, Verlander will go back to work, with his usual businesslike attitude and tireless approach. He's well aware that no matter how talented you are, anything can happen in October.
"This is the game of baseball," he said. "I don't think myself nor the Tigers take anything for granted, no matter who's on the mound."
Rep. Hagan Moves to Ban Sports?Blackouts
State Representative Robert F. Hagan announced today that he has introduced a bill to ban professional sports organizations from ?blacking out? televised broadcasts. Teams that play in stadiums partially or fully funded with public dollars would be prohibited from engaging in the practice.
Ohio taxpayers have spent over $600 million on building two stadiums for the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals alone. Both cities and their respective counties continue to struggle to meet the obligations of their original lease agreements and other contracts related to these structures.
?Ohio?s taxpayers have helped finance many of the pro-sports stadiums and arenas in Ohio and should be able to enjoy the entertainment for which they paid, whether in the stadium itself or from the comfort of their own home,? Rep. Hagan said.
The legislation, House Bill 599, will prohibit any pro-sports team that regularly plays in a stadium built with taxpayers? dollars from approving a contract that allows televised ?black outs.? Any team?s management that violates this law would be legally compelled to pay back the state, county, or other political subdivision an amount equal to what was originally financed by the public for the arena or stadium.?
?Unfortunately, federal regulations seem to condone the ?black out? policies currently in place,? Rep. Hagan said. ?Though a state law prohibiting the practice could draw legal challenges, I would welcome such a debate on an issue that Ohio?s taxpayers ? and sports fans ? find important.?
Professional sports organizations often ?black out,? or restrict televised access for, sporting events due to a minimum ticket sales threshold not being met.
Rare genetic disorder points to molecules that may play role in schizophrenia
ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Scientists studying a rare genetic disorder have identified a molecular pathway that may play a role in schizophrenia, according to new research in the Oct. 10 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. The findings may one day guide researchers to new treatment options for people with schizophrenia -- a devastating disease that affects approximately 1 percent of the world's population.
Schizophrenia is characterized by a multitude of symptoms, including hallucinations, social withdrawal, and learning and memory deficits, which usually appear during late adolescence or early adulthood. Efforts to identify disease causes have been complicated by the fact that no single genetic mutation is strongly associated with the disease. By studying a rare genetic disorder that increases the risk of schizophrenia, Laurie Earls, PhD, and colleagues in the laboratory of Stanislav Zakharenko, MD, PhD, at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital identified molecular changes that affect memory and are also present in people with schizophrenia.
Approximately 30 percent of people with a genetic disorder known as 22q11 deletion syndrome develop schizophrenia, making it one of the strongest risk factors for the disease. In previous studies of mice with the 22q11 deletion, Zakharenko's group identified changes in nerve cells leading to deficits in the hippocampus -- the brain's learning and memory center -- that appear with age. In the current study, the group confirmed similar molecular changes occur in people with schizophrenia. They also zeroed in on the gene contributing to the nerve cell changes.
"This study makes some very important discoveries about the precise mechanisms underlying the learning and memory deficits seen in the genetic mouse model -- problems that are a central part of the human disease," said Carrie Bearden, PhD, an expert on 22q11 deletion syndrome at the University of California, Los Angeles, who was not involved in the study. "Pinpointing the specific gene involved is the first step toward developing targeted therapies that could reverse the cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia, both in the context of this genetic mutation and the broader population," she added.
In previous studies, Zakharenko's group found that abnormal nerve cell communication and cognitive dysfunction was associated with elevated levels of a protein that regulates calcium in certain nerve cells known as Serca2. These abnormalities are only detectable with age in mice with the 22q11 deletion.
In the current study, the researchers identified the gene Dgcr8 as the source of the changes.It produces molecules called microRNAs that normally keep Serca2 in check. Without them, the protein becomes elevated.By adding these molecules back into the hippocampus of animals with the 22q11 deletion, the researchers were able to reduce elevated Serca2 levels and reduce the cellular deficits associated with this genetic defect.
To assess whether the findings from these genetic mouse studies might translate to schizophrenia, the authors analyzed post-mortem brain tissue from people with schizophrenia. The researchers discovered that Serca2 was elevated even in patients with schizophrenia who did not have the 22q11 deletion.
"These data suggest a link between the nerve cell changes in patients with the 22q11 deletion syndrome and those that occur in patients with schizophrenia," Zakharenko said. "Serca2 regulation represents a novel therapeutic target for schizophrenia."
This study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
LG Optimus L9 for T-Mobile hands-on (update: video)
LG Optimus L9 for TMobile handson
Just a day after it announced the LG Optimus L9, T-Mobile showed the smartphone off at MobileCon 2012. It's definitely a worthy member of the L-series of stylish (yet mid-range) handsets, sporting the same signature look and feel that the Korean manufacturer has taken to heart over the past few months. The device features a 4.5-inch qHD display, 2,150mAh battery, 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor with 1GB RAM, Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), 5MP rear camera with 1080p video recording capability, Gorilla Glass 2, 4GB internal storage and external storage capacity and support for the usual T-Mobile HSPA+ radios. Power users may not have a lot of love or appreciation for this device, given its rather mediocre processor compared to the rest of the giants on the market today. In our brief time using the L9, we witnessed a few bouts of lag, though we won't take too much of that seriously for now since this isn't the final retail product. But it feels comfortable in the hand, well-built and boasting the same leathery-textured battery cover as most of LG's recent phones. Check out our collection of images below!
California gasoline prices ebb at last after record run
(Reuters) - Record-high retail prices for gasoline in California began to ease on Wednesday, receding from an unprecedented rally to nearly $5 a gallon, even as further refinery disruptions threatened to slow the decline.
The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the state dipped by a half cent to $4.666, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge website, easing from the previous day's record. A dramatic spike in prices began just over a week ago.
While wholesale prices had begun falling last Friday, it took some time for retail rates to follow. Prices are still up more than 45 cents from a week ago, and the premium that California's motorists are paying versus the U.S. average remains unusually wide at about 86 cents.
In Los Angeles, where shortages had been so acute that a handful of service stations stopped selling fuel, average prices remained above $4.90 a gallon. That was among the highest levels in the state, said the AAA, an automobile club. Prices had topped $5 a gallon at many gasoline stations.
Retail prices surged by more than 50 cents a gallon last week and wholesale premiums rose by almost a dollar after a series of refinery mishaps pinched supplies.
Market sources said a possible "short squeeze" that came about when a big refiner was forced to buy fuel on the spot market may also have been a factor.
The spike prompted Henry Waxman, the ranking member of the House of Representatives' Energy and Commerce Committee, to ask the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the causes. In a letter to Jon Leibowitz on Tuesday, Waxman said the common explanation for the increase was a gasoline supply crunch resulting from refinery shutdowns.
But Waxman said periods of tight gasoline supplies require vigilance because of opportunities for market manipulation, especially when only a few players hold most of the market share. "When Los Angeles consumers see their gasoline prices skyrocket by 50 cents per gallon over the course of one week, something is wrong," Waxman said in the letter.
The price increase, the biggest in any single state since 2005's Hurricane Katrina, according to the AAA, has unnerved drivers in car-loving California and led the state's two U.S. senators to call for a federal investigation of possible manipulation in the gasoline trading markets.
Average Californian households burn about 100 gallons (378 liters) of gasoline a month at a cost of about $466 at Wednesday's prices, the AAA said.
The price spike eased after California Governor Jerry Brown on Sunday ordered that service stations be allowed to begin stocking "winter-blend" fuel three weeks ahead of schedule, allowing refiners to start making the cheaper blend.
Wholesale prices dropped by 60 cents a gallon on Monday, and analysts said a sharp fall in retail prices would follow within about a week, barring further market disruptions.
But on Tuesday, wholesale prices in Los Angeles jumped by 26 cents a gallon after Exxon Mobil Corp said in a regulatory filing it would move ahead with planned work on its nearby Torrance refinery for the rest of October.
A power failure at the plant tightened supplies and contributed to last week's price surge.
Meanwhile, Chevron Corp said a key unit at its Richmond, California refinery, which suffered a major fire in August and contributed to the supply squeeze, would remain shut through the end of the year - the long end of estimates by industry sources.
Sprint adds LG Mach, Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and tri-mode USB dongle to fall LTE lineup
Sprint adds two LG phones, the Galaxy Tablet 2 101 and a USB dongle to its LTE lineup
If simple vanity trinkets don't excite you, Sprint has something else to tempt you in -- four new LTE devices. The new line-up includes two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle, so hopefully something for everyone. The phones? The 13-megapixel toutin' Optimus G (as we suspected) and Mach (a cheaper, 1.2GHz dual-core, 4-inch, 1080p capable QWERTY ICS phone), both by LG. If you need a little more screen real-estate, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will be joining the other Koreans with its 1.5GHz dual-cores and 1,200 x 800-screened ICS on the good ship Sprint too. Happy with your notebook, and just want the service? Sprint's adding a Plug-in-Connect USB dongle to the menu also. No deets on cost and dates we're afraid, with "fall" being all the info we've got right now. Feel free to delve into the PR after the break, in the meantime though.
Osborne to slash welfare after next election
BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - Britain's Conservative-led government will trim an extra 10 billion pounds ($16 billion) a year from its welfare budget and make cuts across the board in the next phase of austerity if re-elected, its finance minister said on Monday.
The 2015 election is likely to be decided on the health of the economy, how fast the deficit should be tackled and what areas of spending and taxation each party would focus on to balance Britain's stretched public finances.
The Conservatives, who had bet growth would reduce the deficit and help them win the next election, are struggling with a recession and a series of blunders which have put them about 10 points behind the Labour Party in opinion polls.
Chancellor of the Exchequer (finance minister) George Osborne and Prime Minister David Cameron want to use their party's annual conference in Birmingham to project an image of economic prudence and win back support.
They hope voters will welcome a further 10 billion pounds of cuts in welfare spending - an area often portrayed in the media as rife with scroungers and waste.
"How can we justify giving flats to young people who have never worked?" Osborne told party supporters before a large Union Jack-design backdrop at a party conference whose slogan is "Britain can deliver".
"We made a promise to the British people that we would repair our badly broken economy. We will finish the job we have started," said Osborne, a close Cameron ally who was booed by crowds at a Paralympics medal ceremony last month.
In the 35-minute speech, Osborne said the Conservatives must appeal to those who aspired to improve their lot in life and said it was a delusion to believe the public finances could be brought back on track by raiding the "wallets of the rich".
Britain's "social protection" budget, by far the biggest of all departmental spending, is estimated at 207 billion pounds in 2012/13 - almost a third of total spending.
Labour, which wants to see more taxes on banks and the rich, says Osborne has cut spending too quickly and choked demand. The government says softening its austerity plan would endanger Britain's recovery by putting its low borrowing costs at risk.
Osborne accused the former Labour government of spending too much and said opposition leader Ed Miliband was thus partly responsible for Britain's economic woes: "Labour must never be trusted to run the country's finances ever again," he said.
OSBORNE'S GAMBLE
Osborne's March budget forecast he would have to cut borrowing by 49 billion pounds ($79 billion) in the two years following the 2015 election, after weak growth put paid to his plan to deal with the record budget deficit before the election.
Osborne has staked his reputation on preserving Britain's AAA sovereign credit rating and a 375 billion pound central bank-funded bond-buying project has reduced the cost of government borrowing to record lows.
But the underlying budget deficit has risen by a fifth so far this year compared to the same period last year and public sector debt rose to over 1 trillion pounds ($1.62 trillion) at the end of August - 66 per cent of gross domestic product.
Investors say Osborne, who delivers revised economic and borrowing forecasts on December 5, will be forced to either cut spending more deeply or extend austerity well after the next election to honor his pledge to tame the deficit.
Osborne has refused to say how far behind schedule his deficit reduction plan is but he rebuffed critics who say he should pump up demand with government spending.
"Our critics would gamble everything: our credibility, our financial stability, our low interest rates, the cost of our debt they would risk everything on the dubious idea that a few billion more of spending would dramatically improve the fortunes of the trillion-and-a-half pound British economy," he said.
Osborne said he would allow companies to offer shares in the business to new employees in return for giving up certain dismissal and redundancy rights. Workers would get tax breaks on share profits.
Shaving more off the welfare budget would allow cuts in other government departments to be held at a similar pace as is being enforced in current spending plans which run until the end of the 2014/15 fiscal year, according to Treasury calculations.
The government's next spending review, expected before 2015, will cover much of the 2015-2020 parliament and set the tone for the election battle.
But his plans may cause tension with the government's Liberal Democrat junior coalition partners: Osborne dismissed their calls for a "mansion tax" on expensive homes or a further tax on the wealthy.
"This party of home ownership will have no truck with it," Osborne said. "The great bulk of savings must come from cutting government spending - not increasing taxes." ($1 = 0.6176 British pounds)
Lawyer: Father who shot masked son 'in state of anguish'
By Sevil Omer, NBC News
A Connecticut father who fatally shot what he thought was a masked prowler outside his home only to discover it was his 15-year-old boy is ?in a state of anguish,? his lawyer said on Monday.
?It is a very emotional time,? attorney Gene Zingaro told NBC News. ?The family is left asking so many questions that will go unanswered forever. There will never be a satisfactory answer. The father and the whole family are utterly devastated. The father is in a state of anguish.?
"The family has been broken in half by this tragedy,? Zingaro said.
Zingaro said he spent time with the Giuliano family Sunday during a memorial service for Terry Giuliano, who was shot to death Thursday outside his family?s house in New Fairfield, a town just north of Danbury.
Zingaro said details of the evening have left Terry?s father, Jeffrey Giuliano, inconsolable and physically ill.
Jeffrey Giuliano went outside with a gun around 1 a.m. after his sister called him to say someone was trying to break into her house next door. When he went outside, Giuliano saw a knife-wielding man wearing a black ski mask. The masked figure approached him in a threatening manner, police said. Giulano fired a single shot, killing the purported prowler.
It was only hours later that Jeffrey Giuliano learned that the slain suspect was his?adopted son, causing him to weep and vomit at the scene.
"He was in disbelief and a state of shock," Zingaro told NBC News.
Zingaro said Jeffrey Giuliano, a popular fifth-grade elementary teacher, will not face criminal charges.
?It is my belief that it will be termed an accidental shooting, and he will not face charges,? Zingaro said.
State police say they are continuing to investigate. No charges have been filed.
Zingaro said Giuliano and his wife adopted Tyler and his sister about four years ago.
"It's a tragic loss that cannot be measured,? Zingaro said.
the entertaining house: Slow down, you move too fast...
we have to make these fall mornings last!
We had a non-stop-crazy day yesterday and I have a non-stop-crazy week ahead of me. We're battling colds and so I think a slow and lazy day is much needed around here. I have to pack for my trip to Boston and Newport. I am so honored to be a part of the #InstyleTour, a design and blogging conference, brainchild of Todd Venditouli and Andie Day that takes place in Boston on Monday and then on Tuesday I am meeting ?up with the fabulous Cynthia Bogart, founder of The Daily Basics. A couple of projects to complete and a couple of meetings. All good, but very busy!
So today as I start and wrap up projects, pack and tackle laundry and my children's schedules, I'm hanging out in my flannel pajamas with the most wonderful fall smell in the air. I'm so relaxed right now I'm worried that I may lose any intent to be productive today!?
A couple of weekends ago the children and I went apple picking. I truly think we came home with 40 pounds of apples! We cooked and baked a lot and we placed more around the house on platters and in large bowls to add some fall to our decor. The apples, now two weeks old are a little soft to eat on their own so we're thinking of other ways (other than baking) to use them up. One of my favorite things to do is to simple take some apples, cut them in half or quarters, and add them to a large pan with some cinnamon or cloves... nutmeg. Really you can add anything. Sometimes I add a drop of vanilla and this morning I added a drop of orange essence. Lemon rinds, orange rinds... the possibilities are endless and what you get is the most wonderful aroma in your home. To do this bring the water to a boil and leave it at a rolling boil for a few minutes, then turn the flame down to medium/medium low and let the fruit and spices simmer on the stove top. You can keep this on the stove-top all day if you'd like, simply remember to check the pot from time to time to check water levels. When needed simply add water, the spices are already there and now in concentrated form.
If only I had a screen for my fireplace... Today would be a perfect day... I am on the hunt for one, however!
Wishing you a wonderful and relaxing end to your weekend!
XOXO
